Caffeine increases ambulatory glucose and postprandial responses in coffee drinkers with type 2 diabetes.

چکیده
R ecent laboratory studies demonstrated that caffeine exaggerates glucose and insulin responses to standardized carbohydrate loads in habitual coffee drinkers who have type 2 diabetes (1–3). Similar postprandial effects in everyday life could disrupt clinical efforts to maintain glucose control in patients with type 2 diabetes. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of a moderate dose of caffeine on glucose levels and postprandial glucose responses in free-living coffee drinkers with type 2 diabetes. We specifically predicted that caffeine administration would increase glucose concentrations during the day and exaggerate the glucose increases that followed meals when habitual coffee drinkers with type 2 diabetes were monitored during everyday life.

Postprandial glycaemic and lipaemic responses to chronic coffee consumption may be modulated by CYP1A2 polymorphisms.
There is much epidemiological evidence suggesting a reduced risk of development of type 2 diabetes (T2D) in habitual coffee drinkers, however to date there have been few longer-term interventions, directly examining the effects of coffee intake on glucose and lipid metabolism. Previous studies may be confounded by inter-individual variation in caffeine metabolism. Specifically, the rs762551 SNP...
متن کاملEffects of coffee on ambulatory blood pressure in older men and women: A randomized controlled trial.
This study assessed the effects of regular coffee drinking on 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure (ABP) in normotensive and hypertensive older men and women. Twenty-two normotensive and 26 hypertensive, nonsmoking men and women, with a mean age of 72.1 years (range, 54 to 89 years), took part in the study. After 2 weeks of a caffeine-free diet, subjects were randomized to continue with the caffei...
متن کاملCoffee acutely increases sympathetic nerve activity and blood pressure independently of caffeine content: role of habitual versus nonhabitual drinking.
BACKGROUND Coffee is the most abundantly consumed stimulant worldwide. However, its cardiovascular safety remains controversial. Possible health hazards have been related to its main ingredient, caffeine. Activation of the sympathetic nervous system by coffee may enhance cardiovascular risk; however, it is unclear whether this effect of coffee is related to caffeine or other substance(s) also c...
متن کاملCaffeine impairs glucose metabolism in type 2 diabetes.
C affeine is a widely used drug despite evidence that it has deleterious consequences for health, including diabetes (1). In 1967, a study reported that drinking two cups of instant coffee significantly impaired glucose tolerance in a small group of men with “maturity-onset diabetes” (2). Recent studies showed that caffeine acutely decreased insulin sensitivity in young, nondiabetic adults (3–5...
متن کاملDelayed effects of coffee, tea and sucrose on postprandial glycemia in lean, young, healthy adults.
In observational studies, habitual coffee consumption has been linked to a lower risk of type 2 diabetes. We hy-pothesized that the mechanism may be related to delayed effects on postprandial glycemia. The aim of this study is to investigate the glycemic and insulinemic effects of consumption of caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee, sweetened and unsweetened, tea and sucrose, 1 h prior to a hig...
